Vrijdag is in Gent de tentoonstelling "Vrouw." geopend, naar het gelijknamige boek dat verschenen is bij Uitgeverij Lannoo. Het is een fotoboek van journaliste Betty Mellaerts en persfotografe Lieve Blancquaert die samen tien Vlaamse en Nederlandse vrouwen hebben geportretteerd. Allen zijn ze boven de veertig en vertellen ze over hun leven, werk, idealen, relaties, hun ouder worden. "We wilden hommage brengen aan het ouder worden", zei Mellaerts tijdens de voorstelling van de tentoonstelling en het boek vrijdag in de Sint-Pietersabdij te Gent. "We hopen dat dit boek troost kan geven, in een maatschappij waar oude vrouwen voorbij schuifelen en zich verstoppen".
In het boek staan intimistische, diepgravende interviews met "sterke" vrouwen: ex-Dolle Mina Germaine Groenier, modeontwerpster Kaat Tilley, comédienne Yvonne Verbeeck, zuster Trees Van Klaarland, schrijfster Chris Yperman, bedrijfsleider Martine Reynaers, muzikante Fay Lovsky, cafébazin Malou De Valck, ex-mannequin Ghislaine Nuytten en gynaecologe Marleen Temmerman. De jongste is 44, de oudste 89.
Naast de 10 vrouwen die het woord nemen, staan in het midden van het boek nog 40 fotoportretten van soms minder bekende vrouwen. Geen esthetiserende zwart-wit-foto's, maar broze kleurenprenten, waarop bustes te zien zijn, ontdaan van juwelen en kledij. De Amsterdamse politierechter M. Wildenburg heeft dinsdag de 45-jarige Uruguayaanse fotograaf Daniel Rey Piuma veroordeeld tot een voorwaardelijke boete van 250 euro wegens belediging van kroonprins Willem-Alexander.
Rey Piuma stond op 1 februari 2002, een dag vóór het huwelijk van de kroonprins met Máxima Zorreguieta, op de Dam met een sandwichbord en flyers met foto´s van vermoorde Argentijnen. Hij vroeg daarmee aandacht voor de slachtoffers van het dictatoriale regime in Argentinië. Hij noemde de kroonprins "dom" en het aanstaande bruidspaar "bedorven en amoreel". Na een kwartier werd hij door vijf agenten in een politiebus afgevoerd.
Officier van justitie B. Wind had een onvoorwaardelijke boete van 500 euro geëist. Rey Piuma is niet de eerste de beste die protesteerde tegen de houding van de kroonprins en diens echtgenote. One day in May, people all over the world will be taking a photograph an hour to illustrate a day in their life. Will you be photographing yours too?
The May Day Project is about collecting glimpses into people's lives through photographs. Whether they be self portraits, landscapes or macros, candid or posed, snapshots or something more creative - show what your day was like Saturday May 10th 2003.
On May 10, take out your camera (digital or film) and snap a photo every hour or so showing what you were doing at that point of the day. For example, if I got up at 8am - I'll take a photo to illustrate me waking up. If I went out for lunch at 1pm, I could take a photo of the restaurant. If I'm at a bar at 11pm, I'll take a photo of the drink i had.. and so on!
Once you're all done and have the photos of the day, put them online somewhere and visit The May Day Project. After May 10, a list of links to completed projects will appear at the site.

Hoogtijdagen voor paparazzi:
De ouders van Máxima zijn dezer dagen voor een privébezoek in Nederland. Dat heeft de Rijksvoorlichtingsdienst zaterdag bevestigd. Jorge Zorreguieta en zijn echtgenote Maria de Carmen Cerruti zijn al enkele dagen in ons land.
Het is niet bekend of zij blijven tot de verjaardag van Máxima op 17 mei. Jorge Zorreguieta mocht vorig jaar het huwelijk van Máxima en Willem-Alexander niet bijwonen omdat hij lid was geweest van de Argentijnse regering onder dictator Videla.

Door een onthullende persfoto is de uitslag van de belangrijkste paardenrace in de Verenigde Staten in twijfel getrokken:
A photograph of Kentucky Derby-winning jockey José Santos has racing officials questioning what was in his hand as he crossed the finish line last Saturday. The photo, which ran in several newspapers the morning after the race, depicts a dark area in the space between Santos' right hand and his whip.
Two Kentucky Derby stewards termed the photo ''suspicious,'' and Bernie Hettel, the state's steward at the race, said the photo could lead to further investigation. Santos acknowledged Friday he carried an object in his hand during the race. Some jockeys have been known to use illegal, battery-operated devices.
Getty Images photographer Jamie Squire, who magnified his picture in order to examine it more closely: ``Now that I look at it, it's pretty interesting. I definitely see something in his hand besides the whip. It's an object. And I definitely did not alter the photograph. I stand by my reputation on that.'' The authenticity of a photograph of angels, used by a Lebanese bishop at revival services in Cape Town, is being challenged. A photographic expert said the photograph, showing dancing angels at a church service in Indonesia, had been tampered with and was a fake. Dr Samuel Doctorian, 73, a world-renowned evangelist and founder of churches throughout the world, during a recent visit to South Africa rendered people speechless with his testimony about seeing angels. He said the photograph of about 19.000 worshippers was taken during a service in Surabaya in Indonesia and that he had seen angels on seven occasions in Israel, Egypt, Serbia, England, and most important, at the Greek isle of Patmos four years ago.
Neither the photographer, nor the worshippers noticed anything unusual at the time. The photographer was astounded afterwards when he saw seven bright figures, who appeared surrounded by light, on the photograph. Doctorian was not present at the service when the photograph was taken, but he "trembled" when he saw it. "They look very similar to the angels I have seen," he told Die Burger. "They are white and about six feet tall."
Mike Beaver, lecturer at the Cape Town photographic school, said one has to acknowledge that digital or ordinary film can register more light than the human eye, but he was not convinced that it was the case in this instance. Beaver found that where the alleged angels appeared, the glow was cut off at the bottom of the picture. There was a gap between the glow and the reflection of light on the polished floor. "The glow has to be wider to over-expose the image. The glow is also not consistent with other light spots on the floor."
Doctorian said on inquiry from Brazil that he regretted the photograph. "I honestly thought it was an authentic photograph. I'm visiting Surabaya in July and will personally ask the photographer for details. I do not want to distribute something that's fake."
Meanwhile, church leaders were cautious about expressing an opinion about the authenticity of the photograph.

Sinds 1998 volgt de Amsterdamse fotograaf Siebe Swart met zijn panoramacamera de ingrijpende veranderingen in het Nederlandse landschap. Die veranderingen zijn het gevolg van grote infrastructuele projecten als de HSL, de Betuwelijn en de Westerscheldetunnel.
Siebe Swart werkt al jaren achter de schermen aan de onderdelen van zijn kunstproject en fotografeert zo'n driehonderd locaties met regelmatige tussenpozen, steeds vanuit hetzelfde standpunt. Dat heeft inmiddels geresulteerd in een groot aantal indrukwekkende panorama- en luchtfoto's die nu voor het eerst te zien zijn op de tentoonstelling 'Panorama Nederland 1998-2003-2007' in het Nederlands Fotomuseum in Rotterdam (Witte de Withstraat 63). Komende zaterdag, 10 mei, komt fotograaf Siebe Swart in het museum een lezing geven over zijn project. De tentoonstelling maakt deel uit van de Internationale Architectuur Biënnale Rotterdam (7 mei - 7 juli 2003).

Ohio University is poised to adopt a policy that will ban professors from taking nude photos of students within their own departments. And it has replaced - at least temporarily - the department head whose topless photos of a female student inspired the new policy. The university's actions come two weeks after a former student filed a $3 million lawsuit against OU and one of its most acclaimed employees, Larry Nighswander, an award-winning photographer who heads the nationally ranked School of Visual Communication.
Filed on behalf of Youngstown native Rebecca Humes, the suit accuses Nighswander of violating Humes' civil rights by touching her breast and making inappropriate sexual comments while taking topless photos of her last fall. Nighswander does not dispute taking photos of Humes or other students. He said he made no sexual comments or gestures and insisted the pictures were used "as examples of how to light a subject." Humes filed a sexual harassment complaint against Nighswander last fall, but an internal tribunal cleared him in March.
Some members of the Faculty Senate questioned the validity of the probe, saying the university appeared "eager"' to clear its famous photographer. The panel is expected to decide this week whether to launch an investigation of its own. In the meantime, the university is close to approving a policy that would set guidelines for faculty who take nude or semi-nude photos of students. No policy exists today. The initial draft would have allowed department heads such as Nighswander to continue to photograph students within their departments - if proper consent is given. Under the latest draft, nude or semi-nude models could only come from other departments, Brown said.

A Japanese photographer could be sentenced to death if convicted of premeditated murder in connection with the explosion of an Iraq war souvenir that killed a Jordanian airport employee, a judicial source said.

A Japanese photographer detained for questioning in connection with an Iraqi battlefield souvenir that exploded at a Jordanian airport has been indicted for murder. Hiroki Gomi, 36, has not been formally charged but was indicted on four counts in connection with the explosion that killed a security guard May 1. The charges include premeditated murder, possession of explosive materials without a licence, intention to harm and inflicting damage on property, the officials said. Jordan's military prosecutor said Gomi was ordered detained for two weeks pending an investigation.
Gomi was carrying an explosive device obtained in Iraq when it exploded in the hands of Jordanian security guard Ali al-Sarhan, killing him instantly. Three other people were injured, one critically. Yoshiaki Ito, deputy managing director of the Mainichi Shimbun newspaper, Gomi's employer, said the photographer told a Japanese Embassy official he found the two devices while covering the war in Iraq. He apparently kept them for 20 days as souvenirs, unaware they could be live, giving one to a Jordanian assistant and keeping one for himself. Ito said Gomi told him yesterday that he "regrets deeply this tragedy and he did not realise that it was an active bomb."
Jordan's information minister today told visiting executives from the Japanese newspaper that he believed Gomi had no intention to commit any act of sabotage, Jordan's official Petra news agency reported. Ito presented Information Minister Mohammed Affash Adwan with a written apology to relay to Jordan's King Abdullah II. Adwan assured Ito that "distinguished relations between Jordan and Japan in all fields will not be harmed by this individual incident".
Gomi joined Mainichi in 1991 and is based in Tokyo. Between 1996 and 1998, he worked in Jordan for the Japan International Cooperation Agency, Japan's version of the Peace Corps.

Photojournalism is something you do for money. Art is something you do for yourself. They are things that used to overlap a great deal. Diane Arbus, Werner Bischof, Cartier-Bresson for example. Photojournalism and art don't overlap much, now. So, it may be important to you to shoot a fair amount for yourself.
Of course, it may not be important. I know lots of photographers who only shoot for the money. Some of them do quite well. But, I don't know anyone whose pictures knock your socks off that doesn't also shoot for themselves.

De eerste twee weken na die foto ben ik erg van slag geweest. Ik sliep slecht en moest de hele tijd aan die foto denken. Het heeft veel indruk op me gemaakt. Ik hoorde van mijn neefje dat hij ook al in schoolboeken staat. Bij maatschappijleer. Om te discussiëren over ethiek en fotografie. Onlangs heb ik er de Zilveren Camera mee gewonnen. Maar meer geld heb ik er niet mee verdiend. Ik ben in vaste dienst. Nou ja, ik heb een salarisverhoging gehad. Misschien mede door die foto. Maar mijn opdrachten bij het ANP zijn niet veranderd. Iedereen moet hier alles kunnen doen.

Fotograaf Henk Braam (1960), in 1999 winnaar van de Zilveren Camera in de categorie Buitenlands nieuws, exposeert foto's die hij maakte in Calcutta.
Op het eerste gezicht is Calcutta een lelijke en wanhopige stad. Overbevolkt en smerig. Alleen met de komst van de moessonregens wordt de stad ontdaan van stof en vuil en wordt de glans van deze voormalige hoofdstad weer zichtbaar. Braam toont met zijn foto's dat in de ellende van Calcutta veel hoop is; Calcutta is een stad met een ziel. Er zijn dan ook maar weinig metropolen zo contrastrijk als Calcutta. . . In deze miljoenenstad brengen, dwars door het razende verkeer, de menselijke trekpaarden je voor een klein bedrag naar iedere gewenste plek. De riksjalopers rennen vaak op hun blote voeten door de straten, die tijdens de moesson soms onder water staan. Het is een hard bestaan. Vaak doet de riksja 's nachts dienst als slaapplaats. Maar in vergelijking tot de allerarmsten hebben zij het nog goed. Wie niets heeft, slaapt op straat. Daar tegenover heeft Braam rijke golfspelers gefotografeerd die hun spel spelen, terwijl ze worden gevolgd door caddies die (ook weer op blote voeten) hun golftassen mogen dragen; een droombaan. De tehuizen en sterfhuizen zitten overvol. In de Kali tempel wordt dagelijks geofferd aan tempelpriesters.

Mario Testino is the only person from Peru anyone has ever heard of. That has not stopped some sniffy critics, however, from suggesting that Mr Testino is not a great photographer. Some sniffier ones have suggested he is not even a good one. I'm afraid I can't be of much help since any photographs of mine look as if they were taken during a nuclear whiteout. Suffice it to say, Mr Testino has made beautiful people, such as Kate Moss, Princess Di and Kylie Minogue, look even more beautiful, which isn't fair to the rest of us, while making other less beautiful folk -- Tracey Emin, Mick Jagger and Jarvis Cocker -- look okay.

Mario Testino is a "sought-after" fashion photographer who has a very pleasing name and a very boring exhibition. It is made up of photos of famous and glamorous people looking famous and glamorous. The only challenge to be found here is trying not to imagine the sound of Mario inserting his head up celebrity bottoms. I was shocked and outraged that the National Portrait Gallery would put on this crap.

Vanavond om 21.00 op RTL 5: In de ban van sport: het perspectief van Monique Velzeboer.
De wereld leek te vergaan voor deze shorttrack-schaatster, toen ze in 1993 tijdens de training viel. De klap tegen de boarding was zo hard, dat Monique een dwarslaesie opliep. Vijf jaar later besloot ze fotografe te worden en meldde ze zich aan bij de Fotoacademie van Amsterdam. Vanuit haar rolstoel portretteerde ze vorig jaar bekende Nederlandse schaatsers. De opbrengsten van de kalender die daaruit voortkwam liet ze ten goede komen aan het Lilianefonds, een instelling die zich bekommert om de revalidatie van gehandicapte kinderen in de derde wereld. In opdracht van datzelfde Lilianefonds maakte ze een portretserie in Rwanda. 'In de ban van sport' volgde haar tijdens de reis.

Panorama-camera's als de Hasselblad XPan worden de laatste jaren ook door fotojournalisten als Kadir van Lohuizen steeds meer gebruikt. De vernieuwde Hasselblad panorama-camera, de XPan II, zal naar verwachting medio juni leverbaar worden. Verbeteringen zijn ondermeer: zoekerdisplay met informatie over sluitertijden en belichting, meervoudige belichtingen, B-tijd verlengd tot max. 540sec., zelfontspanner met voorlooptijden van 2 en 10 sec., flitssyncronisatie naar keuze aan het begin of einde van de belichting, verbeterde prestaties bij gebruik van snelle zwart/wit infraroodfilm, optie om bij filmontwikkeling filmeinde uit cassette te laten steken, elektrische ontspanning via optionele ontspankabel, dioptrielens met vergrendeling, zonnekap voor 45 en 90mm met vergrendeling.

Canadian Reuters photographer Jim Young has won a National Newspaper Award in the category of News Photography for his picture of a grieving widow of one of the Canadian soldiers killed in Afghanistan. The National Newspaper Awards have been Canada's premier journalism awards for more than 50 years.
